Food and Drink Matters is proud to announce that B Smith Packaging has been selected as our Packaging Company of the Month, for its provision of high quality and bespoke sustainable packaging for a vast range of clients.
B Smith is a third generation family business, celebrating its fifty years anniversary this year. B Smith prides itself on being a friendly and family run company while maintaining the ability to work on a national and global basis with large companies. Featuring a close knit and experienced team, B Smith boasts a very low staff turnover, a key strength which facilitates a consistent and expert service for its clients.
Based in Worcester, B Smith supplies premium bespoke sustainable packaging to help companies promote their brand, sell their products and enhance their profits.
“One of our key benefits is that we can design and produce unique styles for our customers,” explained Andrew.
“We are also highly flexible, and have our own sales team which goes out and visit clients directly. We like to work closely with them to ensure we find the right solution, and we are the go to company for businesses looking for innovative packaging. We have recently moved into bespoke glassware and fully compostable paper bags that have the properties of plastic.”
As well as providing outstanding packaging options for its clients, B Smith is also contributing towards a more sustainable future.
“There is a misconception in the public eye about the use of plastic – it’s getting a lot of bad press, but the alternative can be worse. The carbon footprint can be up to three times higher when producing paper packaging. A lot of the time, paper can also have certain finishes or lamination which makes it very difficult to recycle.
“The real message should be about re-education, reusing and recycling plastic instead of eliminating it completely – it has lower costs, is more hygienic and promotes brands well. We have a range of bags created from recycled plastic bottles; this is high grade recycled plastic with no nasty food contamination and it makes a really great quality product. Most of the plastic used within packaging is recycled.”
Another key aspect of B Smith’s offering is its dedication to elevating and promoting brands in the most effective way possible.
“We’re currently in the middle of a large campaign within the food industry,” explained Sarah Ward, Key Account Director, who boasts over 20 years’ experience with the company.
“We can provide anything from day to day packaging to luxury gift bags and boxes; whatever is best for the company, we work to design and produce it for them. For example, we work with a number of independent fish and chip companies to create paper, bags and boxes to help with portion sizes and calorie control. It all as a domino effect; if the packaging helps to regulate portion sizes, it can help the shop manage its profit/loss more effectively. The fish and chip industry has such a small profit margin so this is an essential consideration.
“It’s all about the brand. We find out what the company’s requirements are and what the packaging can do for them – it’s a collaborative effort. If the company is firmly against using plastic, we have a complete range of paper products to satisfy their needs. We give everyone a range of options to help them decide what’s best for them and their brand.”
In recognition of the company’s outstanding services, B Smith is a finalist for the Luxury Packaging Supplier category in the Luxury Packaging Awards, and Andrew is a finalist for the Outstanding Contribution to the Industry category in the UK Packaging Awards.
